Responsive Flutter Layouts from 320dp: Constraints, Flex Overflows and Breakpoints
Diagnose and fix layout overflows across all screen dimensions. Understand BoxConstraints propagation, how to prevent RenderFlex overflow errors at 320dp narrow widths, and how to safely handle 2.0x system text scale.

1. Why Flutter Layouts Overflow: The Golden Rule of Constraints
Every Flutter developer learns the foundational layout mantra: > **"Constraints go down. Sizes go up. Parent sets position."**ARow provides **unbounded horizontal constraints** to its children (minWidth: 0, maxWidth: double.infinity). If a child widget inside a Row asks for 200 pixels and its sibling asks for 150 pixels on a 320-pixel wide screen, the total required width is 350 pixels. Because 350 exceeds 320, Flutter cannot satisfy the layout, triggering the infamous **"A RenderFlex overflowed by 30 pixels on the right"** yellow-and-black caution tape error.---2. The 320dp Narrow Viewport Challenge
Google and Apple require that mobile applications support narrow viewports (down to 320 logical pixels on devices like the iPhone SE 1st gen, Samsung Galaxy Fold cover screen, or Android split-screen multitasking).Furthermore, accessibility guidelines require that UI remains functional when users enable **large text scale** (1.5x or 2.0x) in system accessibility settings. A row that looks spacious on an iPhone 15 Pro Max will blow up on an entry-level Android phone with large text enabled.---3. Diagnosing Horizontal Row Overflows with Real Traces
Here is the exact crash trace produced when placing unconstrained Text and Buttons side-by-side in a narrow row:

The following assertion was thrown during layout:
A RenderFlex overflowed by 48.0 pixels on the right.
The relevant error-causing widget was:
Row: file:///lib/product_card.dart:42:14
The overflowing RenderFlex has an orientation of Axis.horizontal.
The edge of the RenderFlex that is overflowing has been marked in the rendering with
a yellow and black striped pattern.

4. The Correct Fix: Expanded, Flexible, and Wrap
#Anti-Pattern: Hardcoded Row without Flexible Wrapping
dart
// β WRONG: Will overflow on 320dp screens or with large text
Row(
children: [
Text('Sustainable Organic Cotton Crewneck', style: TextStyle(fontSize: 16)),
SizedBox(width: 16),
Text('$49.00', style: TextStyle(fontSize: 16)),
],
)
Solution A: Bounding Content with Expanded
dart
// β
CORRECT: Text flexes and truncates or wraps onto multiple lines
Row(
children: [
Expanded(
child: Text(
'Sustainable Organic Cotton Crewneck',
style: const TextStyle(fontSize: 16),
maxLines: 2,
overflow: TextOverflow.ellipsis,
),
),
const SizedBox(width: 12),
Text('$49.00', style: const TextStyle(fontSize: 16, fontWeight: FontWeight.bold)),
],
)
Solution B: Adaptive Switching via Wrap or LayoutBuilder
When badges or tags might wrap onto a second line, replace Row with Wrap:
dart
Wrap(
spacing: 8.0, // gap between adjacent chips
runSpacing: 4.0, // gap between lines
children: [
Chip(label: Text('In Stock')),
Chip(label: Text('Free Shipping')),
Chip(label: Text('Eco Certified')),
],
)
5. Handling 1.5x and 2.0x Accessibility Text Scales Safely
Starting in Flutter 3.16,textScaleFactor was deprecated in favor of TextScaler. You can use TextScaler.clamp to ensure text scales for vision-impaired users while capping extreme values that would break fixed buttons:
dart
Widget build(BuildContext context) {
final mediaQuery = MediaQuery.of(context);
// Allow text scaling between 1.0x and 1.6x, preventing extreme overflow
final clampedScaler = mediaQuery.textScaler.clamp(minScaleFactor: 1.0, maxScaleFactor: 1.6); return MediaQuery(
data: mediaQuery.copyWith(textScaler: clampedScaler),
child: const ProductDetailBody(),
);
}
